FROM crocodile and wallaby to fried lamington ice cream, there’s plenty of room to try something different around Australia Day.
Here are four places in Melbourne where classic Aussie dishes are built with an irresistable twist.
PolePole on Collins St serves meats including crocodile, wild boar, buffalo, camel and ostrich.
Crocodile
Forget what the nursery rhyme taught us. You should smile at a crocodile – especially when it’s served up hot from the grill during the weekly barbecue game nights at African-inspired bar and eatery, PolePole. On any given Thursday, that croc could be joined by wild boar ribs, buffalo skewers, camel porterhouse or emu fillet, all served with condiments and sides. It’s one of the most unique – and delicious – barbecues in town. Game on.

Wallaby
Low in cholesterol, high in minerals and protein, wallaby is our other meat that hops, and, like kangaroo, is finding a growing audience who appreciate its delicate taste that has just a hint of gaminess. Try some over breakfast at The Kettle Black, where ribbons of cured wallaby from Flinders Island – ruby and supple with just a lick of salt – are served with feta-powered creamy scrambled eggs amped with a hit of fresh chilli. It’s bound to convert all doubters.

It’s the cake that fills our hearts with pride, but the humble lamington now is anything but, with chefs using the chocolate-coconut-jam template and running in all directions. At new Fitzroy bar Glamorama big EDM beats are teamed with tasty treats, with none more delicious than the

The lobster doughnut burger gets all the “likes” at this brilliant cafe that’s been packed since opening late last year, but there’s so much more to like about Emma Jeffrey’s menu that steers clear of the usual cafe suspects. And if your tastes turn to the sweet, hit Emma’s inspired take on our unofficial national ice cream, the Golden Gaytime. Here it turns up as a toffee-tinged panna cotta that’s crowned with sticky honeycomb, crunchy sable biscuit and candy-choc shards that go pop in your mouth. It’s a party to which we’re all invited.
